The current automation editor supports starters, conditions and actions, but the exact actions depend on each device.

Instead of attempting one giant routine immediately, Steve created it in stages:

Stage one: 10:15 p.m.

In a Gemini Live session, the user can interrupt, pause, change subjects and resume a conversation more naturally. Google says a previous Live conversation can be resumed for up to an hour by asking to chat again.

However, Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium and is not the mode for controlling the house. Google’s current documentation says smart-home actions are not supported inside an active Live conversation.

To turn on a light or perform another command, the user says “Hey Google” and issues the command, which ends the Live chat.

That distinction is easy to miss:

  • Continued Conversation: Free, brief follow-ups, supports smart-home actions.
  • Gemini Live: Premium, longer conversational sessions, does not perform smart-home actions during the Live session.

Gemini for Home also brings better natural-language understanding outside Live mode.

Released in June 2026 for $99.99 in the United States, the Google Home Speaker is Google’s first audio device designed specifically for Gemini for Home.

It includes:

  • Gemini for Home out of the box
  • Ten natural-sounding voice options
  • Balanced 360-degree audio
  • Environmental microphone processing
  • A light ring that indicates listening, thinking and responding
  • A physical microphone-mute switch
  • Stereo-pair support
  • Multi-room speaker-group support
  • Pairing with Google TV Streamer for home-theater audio

  • Gemini Live with Google Home Premium

The naming is deliberate.

Google moved from the original Google Home speaker to Nest Audio, and now back to Google Home Speaker. That does not mean the entire Nest brand has vanished.

It means Google Home is increasingly the name of the platform and the general-purpose home interface, while Nest remains attached to product categories such as cameras and thermostats.

The Google Home Speaker also makes a home eligible to opt in to Gemini for Home. On existing speakers and displays, Gemini availability has been rolling out through early access by country, language and device.

Once a home switches to Gemini for Home, Google says it cannot switch back to Google Assistant.

Compatible devices receiving the complete experience include:

Several older devices receive most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live, including the original Google Home, Google Home Max and Nest Wifi point.

That is the opposite of saying Google dropped support for every older speaker. Google is bringing much of Gemini for Home to hardware released across roughly the past decade, although feature support varies.

Google’s current camera line includes three wired devices designed for Gemini:

  • Nest Cam Indoor, third generation — $99.99
  • Nest Cam Outdoor, second generation — $149.99
  • Nest Doorbell, wired, third generation — $179.99

The cameras and doorbell offer 2K HDR video, Google’s highest resolution for the Nest camera line at launch.

The Nest Cams provide a 152-degree diagonal field of view. The Nest Doorbell uses a 1:1 aspect ratio and a 166-degree diagonal field of view to capture visitors from head to toe and show packages on the ground.

The new hardware also provides:

  • Improved low-light color performance
  • Infrared night vision
  • Person, vehicle and animal alerts
  • Package alerts on the doorbell
  • Digital cropping and zoom
  • Six hours of included event previews without a subscription

Instead of “Person detected,” an alert might explain that a delivery driver placed a package on the porch and walked away.

Instead of scrolling through hours of events, a user can ask:

“Did I leave the car door open?”

Those results depend on camera placement, recorded history, subscription level, feature availability and Gemini’s interpretation. AI descriptions can be wrong and should not be treated as definitive evidence.

The subscription now covers more than camera recording.

The current flagship thermostat remains a Nest product.

Adaptive Eco considers conditions and attempts to save energy while helping the home return to a comfortable temperature near the expected arrival time.

Smart Schedule can learn preferences and either recommend or automatically apply changes, depending on the selected setting.

Because it is Matter-certified, the fourth-generation thermostat can also be controlled through other Matter-compatible ecosystems. Google Home is no longer necessarily the only app that can interact with it.

📺 Google TV Streamer as a Smart-Home Hub

The Google TV Streamer replaced Chromecast as Google’s premium streaming product, but it is also part of the smart-home architecture.

It includes:

🧩 Matter and Partner Devices Expanded the Platform

Google Home is not limited to products made by Google.

Matter provides a common smart-home standard supported by Google, Apple, Amazon, Samsung and many device manufacturers. It helps compatible devices connect to multiple smart-home ecosystems.

The Google TV Streamer includes a Thread border router, and other compatible Google devices can also participate in Matter infrastructure.

Google has also begun allowing partner cameras to use parts of the Google Home and Gemini platform. Its first major camera partnership was with Walmart’s onn brand:

These products can be configured in the Google Home app and can use supported Google Home Premium features alongside Nest cameras.

The old Google Home experience relied heavily on preset routines.

  2. Morning Routine: Activated lights, weather, calendar, temperature, coffee equipment and media. Replaced several separate morning interactions.
  3. Bedtime automations: Dimmed and switched off lights, adjusted the thermostat, locked a supported lock and started sleep audio. Replaced nightly room-by-room shutdowns.
  4. Find My Phone: Rang an Android phone or properly configured iPhone. Replaced searching under furniture and through pockets.
  5. Room-specific broadcasting: Sent targeted announcements and allowed replies. Replaced yelling through walls.
  6. Scheduled announcement automations: Replaced the discontinued Family Bell feature and reduced repetitive reminders.

The setup also takes longer than the original article’s universal “40 minutes” claim if devices still need to be installed, linked, named, assigned to rooms and tested.

Forty minutes may be enough to configure routines in a home where all hardware is already installed. A complete smart-home deployment can take several hours or more.

But the central lesson remains intact.

Many people already own more automation capability than they use.

😬 The Uncomfortable Truth

Google spent years selling smart speakers by demonstrating the easiest things to explain:

“Set a timer.”

“Play music.”

“What’s the weather?”

Those commands fit into a short advertisement. A presence-based automation with device-state conditions, Matter-connected sensors, camera behavior and thermostat control does not.

The result is that many Google Home and Nest owners still use sophisticated hardware as little more than voice-controlled kitchen appliances.

But the system in 2026 is no longer just a collection of speakers.

It is:

  • A device dashboard
  • A household automation engine
  • A presence-sensing platform
  • A Matter controller
  • A Thread-enabled smart-home network
  • A camera and doorbell interface
  • An energy-management system
  • A multi-room audio system
  • A household intercom
  • A TV-based home-control panel
  • A natural-language assistant
  • An AI camera-search system
  • A daily home-summary service

The Google Home Product Experience

The redesigned app brings modern and older Nest cameras, supported Nest thermostats, Nest Protect emergency alerts and Nest x Yale Lock passcode management into a more unified interface.

Google says all Nest Thermostat models released since 2015 are supported in the current Home app.

At the same time, Google has retired some older products and ended connected support for its earliest first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats.

Hardware age still matters. Not every device receives every new feature. That creates a more accurate conclusion than “Google is phasing out Nest.”

Google is consolidating its smart-home platform under Google Home, replacing Google Assistant with Gemini for Home.

It’s replacing direct Nest Aware subscriptions with Google Home Premium, releasing the new Google Home Speaker, and continuing to sell important products under the Nest name.
